Suse Linux has been around since 1992 and has always been particularly popular in Europe. The company originated in Germany and early versions were simply German localizations of Slackware, but they later formed their own distribution. [1]

Suse was acquired by Novell in Late 2003. Suse has always been known for their distinctive lizard logo.

Suse was only available as a boxed retail option for a long time, but in 2005 started a community project similar to that of Fedora (for Red Hat) under the name OpenSUSE. The boxed editions are still available, but all releases after 10.0 have also been made freely available to the world as they had not been before.

Distinctive features of SuSE include an installation/admin program called YAsT, out of the box support for winmodems, and good laptop support.
