Red Hat (or "Redhat") is a company based in North Carolina and offers a commercial-business based distribution (Redhat Linux) and the company has spun off "Fedora Core Linux" (or just "Fedora") as their free, multi-use distro.

Redhat/Fedora is probably the most used Linux distribution in the world and Redhat has a long and fruitful history. Many other distributions were based on early Redhat Linux, including Mandriva and Caldera, or later versions including CentOS, Pie Box, Tao, and Whitebox.

Both Redhat Linux and Fedora Linux use one of the first and most popular Linux package management systems, of their own invention, called "RPM". Later, they added "yum" support for enhanced package management. Their distributions preference the gnome desktop environment.

Redhat has contributed or assisted many Linux based projects and sponsors many others. They also sit on numerous open-source-related organizations.
